The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases explains intestinal gas in plain language: some of it is air you swallow, and some of it is gas that gut microbes make when they ferment carbohydrate that reached the colon. A swollen feeling after a meal can be that gas, a large volume of food, constipation, or a sensitivity you have not named yet. It can also be something a website should not guess at. Two weeks of careful habits is a reasonable home experiment for the ordinary, repeating, meal-related kind. It is a bad experiment for pain that is new, severe, or paired with other warning signs.

What "fix" can mean here

The headline is a search phrase. The honest version is narrower. You can often learn, in fourteen days, whether carbonated drinks, sugar alcohols, eating speed, or a sudden jump in fermentable foods line up with the evenings you unbutton your waistband. You cannot promise a flat abdomen on day 14. Fat and bloating are different. Fat does not arrive after lunch and leave by morning. If your size changes across a single day, you are looking at contents and fluid, which is the topic of this page. The foods article lists specific items people use. This page is the method for testing them without changing ten variables at once.

You might be thinking a probiotic or a cleanse is the faster route. Cleanses are not part of this plan. A probiotic is a specific microbe at a specific dose studied for a specific problem. A general product does not inherit those results. Spend the two weeks on habits you can describe.

What a low-FODMAP trial actually found

Emma Halmos and colleagues ran a controlled crossover study, published in Gastroenterology in 2014, in 30 people with irritable bowel syndrome and 8 healthy controls. For 21 days, almost all food was provided. One diet was low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols — the FODMAP carbohydrates — and the other was a typical Australian diet. In the IBS group, overall symptom scores were lower on the low-FODMAP diet (about 23 on a 100-millimeter scale versus about 45 on the comparison diet). Bloating, pain, and wind were lower too. Healthy controls had few symptoms on either diet.

Read the frame before you copy the diet. These were people who already had IBS. Food was supplied, so the diet was strict. Twenty-one days is close to the two weeks in the headline and is not a lifetime assignment. A low-FODMAP pattern that never reintroduces foods can narrow the diet more than the symptoms require. If you suspect IBS, the right guide is a clinician or a dietitian who uses the Monash University approach, including the reintroduction phase. Doing a harsh elimination from a blog and staying there is how people lose foods they could have kept.

This article is not diagnosing IBS. A pattern of bloating plus pain, plus a change in stool, is a reason to be assessed, not a reason to collect labels.

A fourteen-day test with one lever at a time

Days 1 to 3: write, do not overhaul. Note the time, the meal, and whether distension showed up, on a simple 0 to 10 line. Include drinks. Most people discover a carbonated beverage or a large raw salad at dinner that they had filed under "healthy" and not under "this is when it starts." Swallowed air rises when you eat quickly, talk through every bite, chew gum, or drink through a straw. The NIDDK page lists those ordinary contributors. Slowing down is free.

Days 4 to 8: remove one cluster. Choose the cluster that matched your notes. Common ones are fizzy drinks, sugar-free sweets and gums that use sorbitol or mannitol, or a sudden large serving of beans or onion-family vegetables you are not used to. Keep the rest of the diet stable so you can tell what changed. If you remove five things, you will feel different and you will not know why.

Days 9 to 14: hold that change and put a walk after the largest meal. Ten minutes of easy walking is a mechanical help for a meal that is sitting high, not a workout you need to optimize. Keep protein and a starch on the plate so you are not "fixing" bloating by under-eating. Under-eating creates its own problems, described in the calorie guide only if fat loss is actually your goal. It is not the goal of this fortnight.

If the scores drop, keep the change and, if you removed a whole food group, add a small portion back so you learn your dose. If the scores do not drop, the lever was wrong. Put the food back and talk with a clinician if the symptom is loud enough to organize your day.

Warning signs that end the home test

Stop self-experimenting and get medical care promptly if you have blood in the stool, black stool, vomiting that persists, pain that wakes you from sleep, trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, fever, or a swelling that is one-sided or hard. Those are not bloating tips. Two weeks of peppermint tea does not belong between you and an evaluation. The contact page is for this website. It is not a clinic.

Constipation can feel like bloating. If you are going several days without a bowel movement, the experiment is fluid, a regular meal rhythm, and a conversation with a clinician or pharmacist about what is appropriate for you. This page will not recommend a laxative dose.

How this connects to microbes without overselling them

Fermentation is microbial work. That does not mean your microbiome is "broken" because onions bother you. The gut-brain article separates measured findings, such as the revised cell counts and the gene catalogue, from mood and weight claims that outrun the data. A varied diet of plants you tolerate supports that story better than a permanent short list of "safe" foods. The glossary is a good place to keep the words straight: bloating, deficit, and core session are not synonyms.

Stress changes how the gut moves. If your worst days are your most rushed days, the stress article is relevant as background. It does not replace the food experiment above.
